An analysis was made in 301 patients over 65 years of age who undeerwent operation at the department of General Surgery, Seoul adventist Hospital, from january 1989 to December 1993.
@ES The following results were obtained.
@EN 1) The ratio of the elderly patients who underwent operation to all surgical patients during the same period was 5.2%(301/5815).
2) Yearly, elderly surgical patients were increased from 42 cases at 1989 to 82 cases at 1993.
3) The distribution of age was 137 patients from 65 to 69 years(45.5%), 100 patients from 70 to 74 years(33.2%), 39 patients from 75 to 79 years(13.0%), 21 patients from 80 to 84 years(7.0%), 4 patients over 85 years(1.3%) and the ratio of male
to
female was 1 : 1.03(148/153).
4) The average duration of admission was 14 days.
5) The method of anesthesia: general anesthesia was 252 cases(83.7%), spinal anesthesia was 45 cases(15%) and local anesthesia was 4 cases(1.3%).
6) Malignant disease was 102 cases(33.9%) and stomach cancer was the most common malignant disease(60.9%). Benign disease was 199 cases(66.1%), and appendicitis was the most common non-malignant disease(36.2%).
7) 247 precperative coexistent diseases were found in 214 patients(71.1%), and cardiovascular disease was most common(27.1%).
8) Operation was underwent in 301 cases of total 368 cases and operation rate was 81.7%.
9) The rate of postoperative complications were 62 cases in 54 patients(17.9%) and pulmonary complication was most common(43.5%).
10) The rate of postoperative mortality was 3.3%, and the most common cause of death was sepsis.
11) The rate of the postoperative complication & mortality were inereased by aging process, duration of general anesthesia, malignant diseases, preoperative coexisting disease, emergent operation & abdominal operation.
